We are learning Chinese at school

Our eldest pupils and their teachers have just started to learn Chinese. The lessons take place at our school every Wednesday. This introduction to Chinese language and culture is an extra activity (non compulsory) that pupils and teachers can have for free.

Our teacher is Li Ju Yang (also called Serena) has got a degree in Spanish and has been selected by the Chinese Government to introduce their language and culture in Europe. This course is part of an Experimental Programme organized by the Regional Education Department in Valencia.

Our school is going to visit Stratford Upon Avon next April

Our school, Col·legi Hernández, has been invited on behalf of The Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations Committee to take part as guests in the 2011 Celebrations marking the birthday of William Shakespeare  in Stratford upon Avon.

We have been invited due to the diffusion of Shakespeare plays among our pupils. Our project is called ‘Shakesperience’ and it was presented during the 1st Multilingual Symposium in the Valencian Community and it won the XII Innovation Teaching Experience Prize ‘Ciutat d’Alzira’ in November 2010.

‘Shakesperience’ started with the visit of Barbara Gentles, a British teacher who introduced the author and his plays to our pupils. ‘Shakesperience’ is a collection of all the activities done around Shakespeare by our Infant, Primary and Secondary students. We would like to highlight the adaptation of ‘Romeo and Juliette’ to an alternative communication system based on pictographs.

In April, before our departure to Stratford upon Avon, Barbara Gentles is going to visit us again. We will sure enjoy ourselves and improve our knowledge about Shakespeare, as well as the didactic techniques used by the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The 'Pilota Valenciana Federation' visits our pupils

Ricard Sentandreu (Villanueva de Castellón) and ‘El Moro’ (Alcantera del Xúquer) members of the ‘Pilota Valenciana Federation’ visited our Year 6 Primary students last 14th February. This is one of the activities of the ‘Pilota a l’Escola 2011’ project, an Innovation Teaching Experience. We also took part last year and our pupils won the regional championship.

One of the objectives of our Multilateral Comenius Association is to spread this sport around Europe. During our visit to Poland, last November, we showed a DVD explaining what ‘pilota valenciana’ is. In further visits to other schools we are going to show the students how to play it.
